The Crystal Palace in Porto

Crystal Palace in Porto: out of sight of those who walk in Porto’s Historical Centre, on the west zone of the city, you will find the beautiful Crystal Palace Gardens. Well, we call it like that because in the early times existed, indeed, a real Crystal Palace – very similar to the one in London.

Built of granite, iron, and glass, the masterpiece belongs to the English architect Thomas Dillen Jones.

Conceived to be the scenario of the famous International Exhibition of Porto, the crystal palace was founded by the king D. Carlos, in 1865.

It remains in the memories of the elderly locals, who remember it with pity for being replaced, in 1951, by a pavilion named Rosa Mota – a famous Portuguese professional runner – very different from the original one.

On the other hand, the gardens are breathtaking not only for their beauty but also for the landscape surroundings.

Those gardens were designed by Émile David and you can visit them for free.

If you want to know more about this amazing place you definitely have to join City Lovers Tours and learn about the origins and secrets of Crystal Palace and its Gardens.
