São Bento station is 100 years TODAY!

Such a special city!

One of the main landmarks of Porto, the São Bento Station, is 100 YEARS TODAY!

If you’re wondering around the city, you have probably noticed it. After all, it is hard to miss it (especially if you need to take the train!).
It is considered one of the most beautiful railway stations in the world and was originally a cloister. Its opening happened precisely 100 years ago, in October 5th, 1916, and that is why it is named after a saint (São Bento).

It is now, as it was then, a remarkable monument to the city, a majestic architectural work of art designed by Marques da Silva, inspired by the french influence. A considerable amount of 20000 tiles from Jorge Colaço line the walls of the station to remember historical events. And despite its cultural value, the station is often a movie set and a concert stage (as in 2014, when the english band James performed for free).

However, São Bento is so versatile that its owners have a plan to build a hotel and shopping areas to enhance the station. So in addition to its utility as a train station, the beauty of the building of Marques da Silva has attracted tourists from all over the world.
