If you’re in Porto you should know that Lello is not only one of the most emblematic bookstores in Portugal, but also in the world, so, going there is a must to enrichen your trip!
With City Lovers Tours it’s possible to join the Cultural Walking Tour (click here!) and get to know more about this hidden treasure in Porto’s downtown.
What you need to know:
Lello’s history is fascinating and starts in the beginning of the 20th century with the decision of two brothers to open it. The Lello brothers, also known as the United brothers, started the bookstore in Rua do Almada (the same street of City Lovers Toursheadquarters and travel desk – you’ll find us here if you need anything!). Later, in 1906 moved to Rua das Carmelitas where it still remains and attracts up to 5000 visitors a day in high season! Watch out for the line!
Its unique architecture starts in the building neo gothic front and it’s two side paintings representing art and science, but it’s on the inside that the magic happens.
The outstanding roof, the amazing stained glass and the famous red staircase – which inspired J. K. Rowling and the Harry Potter stories – may steal your attention, but you shouldn’t miss other special details such as the busts of many Portuguese writers like Camilo Castelo Branco and Eça de Queirós, the intricate wood work and much more.
The details are endless and all worth seeing, but don’t forget the books: lots of first editions, old and rare books can be found in Lello, so it’s definitely worth spending some time there.
You can visit from 10h to 19.30h on week days or from 10h to 19h on weekends and the ticket will cost you 3€, but they’re deductible in the price of anything you buy there.
