Another delicacy widely eaten in Porto, which are somewhat specific to the city, are the fabled Bifanas à Moda do Porto. Itself meaning ‘Porto-style Bifanas’ they are different here to much of the rest of the country where it is simply a pork steak grilled in bread. Some places may add a touch of mustard but nothing too out there. So nice, but nothing close to those from Porto. Although it is done in a similar style across the North of the country, what with Porto being the unofficial capital of the region.
Here thinly cut strips of pork are boiled in a sauce derived from differing quantities of beer, chilli and other flavours depending on the specific bar.
There is nothing more local than going to a local ‘tasca’ (bar) for a Bifana while FC Porto play on the ubiquitous television. Washed down by a Super Bock, of course!
