Bifanas, one of the most popular dishes in Portugal.
A delicacy that’s widely eaten in Porto, which somewhat specific to the city, is the fabled Bifanas à Moda do Porto.
Itself meaning ‘Porto-style Bifanas’ they are different here from much of the rest of the country where it is simply a pork steak grilled in bread.
Some places may add a touch of mustard but nothing too out there.
So nice, but nothing close to those from Porto. Although it is done in a similar style across the North of the country, what with Porto being the unofficial capital of the region.
Here thinly cut strips of pork are boiled in a sauce derived from differing quantities of beer, chili, and other flavors depending on the specific bar.
Where to have Bifanas à Moda do Porto?
There is nothing more local than going to a local ‘Tasca’ (bar) for a Bifana while FC Porto plays on the ubiquitous television. Washed down by a Super Bock, of course!
